Annie is a show where New York City c.1933 is one of the main characters. This character for us is entirely computer generated. In the background of nearly every projection we have some element of the Empire State Building, which would have been completed just a year or two before Annie sang her way into Mr. Warbucks’ life. It stands in stark contrast to the tenements and orphanage, looms in the distance of the shantytowns, draws us in to Mr. Warbucks’ song “NYC”, and stands firm outside the mansion reminding Annie how far she’s come in just a day.

This also gave us a path to the color palette of Annie’s journey as she brings warmth to every life she touches on her way to find her parents. Starting off with a cooler tone as she tries to keep her friends warm in the drafty orphanage and moving toward a warmer palette in the mansion.
